Orthodontic headgear is a type of orthopaedic appliance attached to dental braces or a palatal expander and extends around the head to correct severe bite problems. Usually those problems consist of misalignment of the jaws, where either the maxilla or mandible is in a prognatic position (too much forward), or the maxilla or mandible is in a retrognatic position (too much backwards).
